Referral procedure

The team have an open referral procedure for any child who has a Knowsley GP and is between the ages of Birth - 19 years with a specific therapy need.

Referral can be made using an integrated referral form and sent to the above addresses, or can be made by telephone to the admin staff.

Health Visitors have access to an electronic record system and are able to refer to the service in this way.

All referrals are triaged by a clinical team to ensure they meet the criteria for assessment. If they are screened as appropriate, the child will be placed on a waiting list and the parents / carers will be contacted as soon as possible when an appointment is available. For some children, this may involve the parents / carers attending a group where therapy staff will work to support them to develop strategies to support their child.

For children referred to Speech and Language Therapy aged under 3 ½ years, it is recommended that they attend Chatterbox groups run via Knowsley Children’s Centres. Speech and Language Therapy staff attend these groups and will be able to assess children, provide early advice and determine if any further targeted support from Speech and Language Therapy is needed.  For more information about these groups, please speak to staff at your local children’s centre.
